A donation of R150 buys one fire blanket, two hot meals and a hygiene pack, handed over to a family at UDRS's next distribution in Kya Sand. It is the smallest preset on our donation page, can be once-off or monthly, and is general relief, not an earmarked appeal.

What does a donation to a fire relief charity actually buy?
At UDRS, R150 is one object and two meals: a fire blanket, two hot meals and a hygiene pack. That is the whole claim. There is no administration line inside it and no promise bigger than the bundle itself.
The point of naming it is that most appeals say “help us help others.” We would rather you could picture what leaves the van, and who it is handed to.
| Amount | What our donation page says it covers |
|---|---|
| R150 | One fire blanket, two hot meals and a hygiene pack |
| R500 | A school uniform, stationery and books: one child stays in class for the year |
| R1 000 | A full emergency relief package for one household after a fire |
What does a fire relief distribution look like?
It looks like people queuing under a tree and volunteers serving food from a trestle table. The photographs below are our own, from UDRS distributions. They are not stock images.
Relief for a household after a fire has three parts: warmth, food and basic hygiene. The R150 bundle is built from exactly those three, which is why a blanket sits next to the meals and not instead of them.

Is R150 the same as the Nkgotwe fire appeal?
No, and the difference matters. R150 is general relief for the next distribution. The Nkgotwe appeal is a single named rebuild: in July 2025 a fire destroyed the home of Mrs Dikeletsane Nkgotwe in Doornkop, Soweto.
Her family has already rebuilt the shell. What is left is water and plumbing, electricity, tiles, a ceiling and paint. Gifts on that page are earmarked for this home, not the general fund. Read it on the Nkgotwe rebuild page.
We do not publish a rand split between the blanket, the meals and the hygiene pack, so this post does not give one. We also do not say how many bundles a given month produces. Ask us directly if you need either figure.
Can you give R150 monthly, and is it tax-deductible?
Yes to monthly: our donation page offers once-off or monthly, and a monthly gift can be cancelled at any time. On tax, UDRS NPC is an approved Public Benefit Organisation, PBO 930091096, and the page states that a SARS 18A receipt is included.
What you can actually deduct depends on your own figures, so your accountant will apply it to your tax position. For the company side, see how Section 18A giving works. This is general information, not personal tax advice.
Where does the rest of the work sit?
Relief is one of four programmes: relief, education, health and hygiene, and the housing pilot. If you want the whole picture before giving, read what UDRS actually does, plainly, or see what we do and our impact page.
Key points
- R150 buys a fire blanket, two hot meals and a hygiene pack, handed over at the next distribution.
- You can give it once-off or monthly, and a SARS 18A receipt is included per our donation page.
- It is general relief, not the earmarked Nkgotwe home rebuild.
- We do not publish a per-item split, so we do not guess one.
Frequently asked questions
What does R150 buy when you donate to UDRS?
One fire blanket, two hot meals and a hygiene pack, handed over to a family at our next distribution. This is the exact wording on our donation page, and R150 is the smallest preset amount on it.
Is R150 a once-off gift or can it be monthly?
Both. The donation page lets you give once-off or monthly from R150, and you can cancel a monthly gift at any time. Monthly giving lets us commit to a family before the next fire rather than after it.
Is a fire relief donation tax-deductible?
UDRS NPC is an approved Public Benefit Organisation, PBO 930091096, and our donation page states that a SARS Section 18A receipt is included. How much you can deduct depends on your own figures, so ask your accountant.
Does my R150 go to a specific family, like the Nkgotwe rebuild?
No. R150 is general relief for the next distribution. The Nkgotwe home rebuild is a separate appeal with its own earmarked giving page, where gifts are credited to that rebuild and not to the general fund.
How much of the R150 is the blanket and how much is the meals?
We do not publish a per-item split, so we will not guess one here. The published claim is the bundle: a fire blanket, two hot meals and a hygiene pack for R150.
Can I give more than R150?
Yes. Our donation page also lists R500, which keeps a child in class for the year with a uniform, stationery and books, and R1 000, a full emergency relief package for one household after a fire.
